A new map catalogues Britain’s weirdest and rudest place names – and it makes you wonder what on Earth has been going on in this nation for the past few thousand years.

What happened at Three Cocks, for instance? Why is there a place simply called ‘The Bastard?’

And why are we so obsessed with bottoms? There are 136 places called Bottom, from Bushy Bottom, to Great Bottom, to Burnt Bottom, to the frankly unspeakable Pound Bottom.

Let’s not dwell on the fact that last one is uncomfortably close to Sandy Balls.

The Marvellous Map of Great British Place Names is £22 and published by Strumpshaw, Tincleton & Giggleswick.
