I have just tried using the network install disk (and a full DVD) and neither of them seems to start up the graphics correctly on my old PC, so after a bit of research, it turns out I can set the installer to run in text mode rather than graphics mode by changing:
vmlinuz initrd=initrd.img
to
vmlinuz initrd=initrd.img text
when starting up the installer. Then, it will run in text mode, and even offer the option of using VNC to remotely configure. Screenshot:
A recent update to the Android app has been pushed out and it has introduced some new buildings and also increased the level cap on buildings from L3 to L4. I’ve updated my ZR2 Buildings FAQ with this new information. Here’s a copy of the latest building info
Achieved: 2.64 km @ 5:53 min/km. My ZR track was just to finish one of my previous missions, and as soon as the mission ended, I had a zombie chase. I stopped the run there, and it logs as a failed evade. :-( Mind you, one thing I did learn from the zombie chase is that a slow jog to a fast jog doesn’t help. It has to be a full sprint.
Next run: Saturday - 5 km: 5:39 - 5:47 min/km. Completion Time Target: 28:15 - 28:55
So ends a crazy month. We’ve broken records, we’ve been written and talked about across the world, we’ve worn out our F5 keys, and we’ve learned a lot of invaluable lessons about crowdfunding. Our bold campaign to build a visionary new device ultimately fell short, but we can take away so many positives.
We raised $12,809,906, making the Edge the world’s biggest ever fixed crowdfunding campaign. Let’s not lose sight of what an achievement that is. Close to 20,000 people believed in our vision enough to contribute hundreds of dollars for a phone months in advance, just to help make it happen. It wasn’t just individuals, either: Bloomberg LP gave $80,000 and several smaller businesses contributed $7,000 each. Thank you all for getting behind us.
Then there’s the Ubuntu community. Many of you gave your time as well as money, organising your own mailing lists, social media strategies and online ads, and successfully reaching out to your local media. We even saw entire sites created to gather information and help promote the Edge. We’ll be contacting our biggest referrers personally.
Most importantly, the big winner from this campaign is Ubuntu. While we passionately wanted to build the Edge to showcase Ubuntu on phones, the support and attention it received will still be a huge boost as other Ubuntu phones start to arrive in 2014. Thousands of you clearly want to own an Ubuntu phone and believe in our vision of convergence, and rest assured you won’t have much longer to wait.
All of the support and publicity has continued to drive our discussions with some major manufacturers, and we have many of the world’s biggest mobile networks already signed up to the Ubuntu Carrier Advisory Group. They’ll have been watching this global discussion of Ubuntu and the need for innovation very closely indeed. Watch this space!
As for crowdfunding, we believe it’s a great way to give consumers a voice and to push for more innovation and transparency in the mobile industry. And who knows, perhaps one day we’ll take everything we’ve learned from this campaign -- achievements and mistakes -- and try it all over again.
Thank you all
Mark Shuttleworth, the Ubuntu Edge team and everyone at Canonical
P.S. We’ve been assured by Paypal that all refunds will be processed within five working days.

Side run. My legs were still aching from yesterday’s 5K push, so I decided to make today a loose run, and I thought I’d give Endomondo’s Interval Training a go. The beeps were really loud (which is good, as it overpowers whatever I’m listening to) and the beeps tell you which intensity to work at. I’ve programmed a 3K and 5K interval plan which is mainly run at medium intensity for 1km, then slow down for 2 minutes, then repeat for as many times as is needed to beat the distance target. A simple interval training method, and nothing like HIIT or Tabata, but when I finish this MyASICS plan and switch to the Endomondo Half Marathon plan, it will use Interval Training much more heavily.
Want to be a part of Radio Cabel? If you’ve been with us for a while, you may remember us asking the Zombies, Run! community to submit clips for use in Radio Abel way back in Season One. It was such a success, that we’ve decided to do it again!
We’re looking for more “Stories from the road” and “Survival tips”, as well as call-ins from citizens of both Abel Township and New Canton. How do you feel about living in a zombie apocalypse? How does life in Abel differ from life pre-Z-day? What do you really think of that New Canton lot?
Make sure your submissions are no more than a minute long (60 seconds) and after submissions close, we’ll pick the best ones and get them into the game.
You can submit your own radio clips starting today. We’ll stop accepting submissions September 23. Which gives you just over a month to get something over to us. Our actors will record accompanying lines when we can schedule them in, but recording sessions and actor availability mean it may be a while before they are added to the game.
Instead of calling in to a special phone number, we’re going digital with the submission process this time around, so we can ensure a higher quality.
You can email us with your entries in .wav or .mp3 format to support@zombiesrungame.com with the subject “Radio Cabel" (alternatively, please include a link to a Dropbox file if it’s too big to attach). This means that anyone in the world can submit something for Radio New Tomorrow. Abel Township and New Canton are multicultural, equal opportunity survivor camps, after all.
You may recall a while ago, I posted about training plans suddenly showing up on Endomondo. Well, they’ve now hit the mobile app - at least on the Pro version. Unsurprising, really, since Training Plans are a premium feature (at the moment)
Facebook has long been associated with all manner of negative connotations, from murder, rape, party-crashing, yet, when one person tries to point out a security hole, they getting the virtual equivalent of a f**k off, denial that it is a bug, and a metaphorical middle finger? So the hacker then takes it higher and gets suspended for violating T+Cs? Why am I not surprised by Facebook's behaviour? Because that is what I have come to expect of Facebook.
I am thankful I have no Facebook account. I used to many moons ago, and terminating it was probably the best decision of my life.
Commuting to work. Feasible for some, not very much so for others. For me, this is the equivalent of running a Half Marathon each way. Probably not possible right now, but if I could do that, then I would be doing an Annette.
I’ve found out that unetbootin, which is the tool of choice for most usb stick generation, does have it’s problems. I’ve just tried to setup a network install usb stick for Fedora and Debian, and both were fine setting up via unetbootin, but did not boot successfully into the installer (although the splash screen did start.) For both, the initialisation seems to want something in the cdrom drive, but even after putting a disc in there, it doesn’t boot. This also happens when using the netbootcd boot usb.
The solution? Surprisingly simple, actually. To use dd or dcfldd:
Evidently, unfriending people on Facebook won’t stop them posting on your timeline, as this article proves. And the surprising thing (or unsurprising, depending on your perspective), is that Facebook refused to acknowledge it was a bug, so the whitehat went all the way to the top and posted on Zuckerberg’s wall.
This is a very useful boot disk - it allows you to download the latest network installer from the relevant site and boot it, without having to burn or create another stick. It supports the major distributions: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, Mandriva, Scientific Linux, CentOS and Slackware.
Be warned, though, Network Installers by nature can be heavily console-based.
Target: 3 km Intervals 5:24 - 5:48 min/km. Completion time: 16:12 - 17:24 min
Achieved: 2.68 km, 5:30 min/km. Interesting run. This is the first time I’ve seriously tried to use the Zombie Chases option inside the Zombies, Run! app. The first chase happened at 0.47 km into the run. Easily evaded since I was pretty fresh into the run. The second chase happened 2.44 km into the run. I got caught this time. :-(. Interestingly fun, though.
Chases require you to go around 15% faster than your current speed, and can go up to a minute in sprinting. If you put enough distance between yourself and the zombie, you evade them. If you last more than a minute, you evade them. The chase started at 100m and I managed to get 110m between myself and the first zombie.
When the second chase happened, I hadn’t fully recovered from the first chase, so I got caught. But still, it helps push my training. I’m going to keep using this. Maybe I can throw it in during my long runs to help put some variety in my training.
Next run: Saturday – 5km 5:40 - 5:48 min/km. Completion time: 28:20 - 29:00 min
