ZR Store Fix

#

Six to Start have pushed an update for Android to the ZR3 app. It fixes the Store bug.

Weekday Run #9

#

As with run #8, no target. Just trying to recover. Felt better today. Faster, and lasted longer. Still nowhere near what I used to be able to do a few weeks ago. The pollution must had wreaked havoc on my lungs, and its taking time to repair.

Found my Fitbit - it was still clipped to my PJs.

ZR Store Issues

#

Seems like I wasn’t alone:

We are aware that some Android users are experiencing issues with the Zombies, Run! in-app store which is preventing people from obtaining Season Passes. We’re currently working on a fix for this which will be made available as soon as we can — in the meantime, we will be keeping you up to date via the Zombies, Run! Twitter feed.

We’ll also be releasing a new version of Zombies, Run! on iOS which fixes an issue with the Season 3 Special Pass. Currently this will only be available to buy for people who have previously bought any Season 2 Pass and the Season 1 Race Missions.

We’re changing this so that anyone who has previously purchased Season 2 content (a Season 2 Season Pass, Season 2 Pass Plus or a Season 2 Side Mission Pass) will be able to get hold of the Season 3 Special Pass.

Rest assured that the current launch sale for Season Passes will not end until shortly after these problems are solved, so you won’t miss out on your chance to get access to all of our upcoming Season 3 content at a discounted price.

We apologise for any inconvenience that has been caused. We’re working to get these problems solved as quickly as possible!

In case you’re wondering what this “Issue” looks like:

Weekday Run #8

#

No target, just constantly trying to recover my lung capacity and fight some kind of sneeze/cough combination cold. Difficult to run any major distances. Not helped by the fact I’ve lost my Fitbit somewhere, and can’t find it either in my house or on the 3K route. Guess I’ll have to use Fitbit solely for weight tracking now.

Has Heartbleed Made You Think Twice About Open Source Security? Think Again. | Spree Commerce

#

...when there is a need for a security patch or other bug fix, the person in control of implementation is…you. With closed source, you need to wait for the enterprise in control to fix the problem and make it available to users. For example, Akamai, one of the best, most sophisticated technology firms on the planet, is still working to address its Heartbleed vulnerabilities. Thus, users have no choice but to wait on Akamai for a complete fix. Open source users can do what they want with the code. They can use a patch that has been made available on Github, or can otherwise modify their code as they see fit. In fact, because Spree is open source and its users control their own code, they can choose to replace OpenSSL altogether if they so desire.

Job Interviews

#

Something interesting I found out yesterday. I was clearing out some old junk on my laptop and I came across a recording of a phone job interview I had a long while ago. Curious, I listened to it, and cringed. I made so many mistakes on that interview I couldn’t believe it, but during the interview, I felt I did pretty well. Surprisingly, I got the offer. I was in that job for a few years before being made redundant.

So, point of the post. If you can, record your interview if it is a phone one, and you can refer back to it later like I did and learn from it. If you got an offer, you can see what helped push your image across. If you failed to get an offer, you can see if you can determine why you didn’t get it by listening as a third-person.

Zombies, Run! Season 3

#

Zombies, Run! Season 3 is out now. It is an update to the ZR app, so you should be able to continue progress. If not, wipe the cache, relogin and setup the install again.

ZR3 appears to break gmusicfs, so I’m tinkering with settings to see if I can get it back, and it does appear to be VERY laggy at first start.

On the plus side, you can download the first two missions of Season 3, the Season 3 Radio, AND get a season pass for Season 3 at the moment. The update is backwards compatible so you can still play Season 1, Season 2, Race, Radio, Supply, and Airdrop missions.

Stats-philes will enjoy being able to see their stats on the app now.

The app seems to be pretty volatile, and I’ve had it ANR (App Not Responding) many times on me already.

Chromebleed Notifies You if a Visited Site was Hit by Heartbleed Bug

#

The Heartbleed bug is among the major security vulnerabilities we have seen in recent times. It's one of those cases where precaution is the order of the day. You could manually check sites or use Chromebleed, an extension that tells you if the site you're on was affected by the bug.

Chromebleed uses Filippo Valsorda’s little tool to test if the page was hit by Heartbleed and hasn’t issued a patch yet. You’re going to be safe on the bigger websites like Yahoo, but there’s a chance that some of the smaller sites haven’t yet patched their servers, so this little protection will help. If you do visit some such site, Chromebleed will throw a notification warning you, in which case it’s best to exit and notify the site’s developers to fix their issue.

Zombies, Run! | New in Season 3: Player Choice!

#

Some interesting news about Zombies, Run Season 3 from the blog:

It’s been months in the planning - we started talking about our plot arcs and returning characters back in October 2013 - and we’ve got some fantastic surprises coming up, both in plot and in the guest writers we’ve managed to snag for this season. One thing we’ve wanted to do for ages was to introduce a bit of choice into the game for players. I know we’ve already got the base builder, and many of our Runner Fives have made amazing and beautiful Abel Townships. I thought it’d be fun to extend this kind of choice just a little bit, and give Runner Five a couple of options about what they’re actually going to do during the game. It’s this kind of thing that makes games-writing so dynamic and engaging. So, once or twice this season, you’ll be asked to make a decision. We had to think carefully about how to do this - for one thing, you don’t want to be having to stop and press a button while running! And it’s been a design principle from the beginning that we’ll never ‘punish’ the player too much. After all, you’re already out there running, so you’re already a hero! All this means that you won’t be able to destroy Abel with a single bad decision - but some of the things you do will have knock-on effects later in the game. And I’m excited to hear what you make of what we’ve done!

Weekday Run #7

#

Today’s weekday run. Target 8K. Achieved 5.39

I think I’m coming down with some kind of cough. Possibly brought on as a result, or partially as a result of, the recent air pollution. It’s making me wheeze, and I’ve noticed a definite shortness of breath, or apparent reduced lung capacity.

Weight Loss (Humour)

#

A guy calls a company and orders their 5-day, 5lbs weight loss program.

The next day, there’s a knock on the door and there stands before him a voluptuous, athletic, 19 year old babe dressed in nothing but a pair of Nike running shoes and a sign around her neck..

She introduces herself as a representative of the weight loss company. The sign reads, “If you can catch me, you can have me."

Without a second thought, he takes off after her. A few miles later puffing and puffing, he finally gives up. The same girl shows up for the next four days and the same thing happens. On the fifth day, he weighs himself and is delighted to find he has lost 5lbs as promised.

He calls the company and orders their 5-day/10lbs program. The next day there’s a knock at the door and there stands the most stunning, beautiful, sexy woman he has ever seen in his life. She is wearing nothing but Reebok running shoes and a sign around her neck that reads, “If you catch me you can have me”.

Well, he’s out the door after her like a shot. This girl is in excellent shape and he does his best, but no such luck. So for the next four days, the same routine happens with him gradually getting in better and better shape.

Much to his delight on the fifth day when he weighs himself, he discovers that he has lost another 10lbs as promised. He decides to go for broke and calls the company to order the 7-day/25 lbs program.

“Are you sure?” asks the representative on the phone. “This is our most rigorous program.” “Absolutely,” he replies, “I haven’t felt this good in years."

The next day there’s a knock at the door; and when he opens it he finds a huge muscular guy standing there wearing nothing but pink running shoes and a sign around his neck that reads, “If I catch you, you are mine."

He lost 33 lbs that week…

What Is Heartbleed? The Video

Widespread Encryption Bug, Heartbleed, Can Capture Your Passwords

#

Some websites running SSL encryption, such as Airbnb, Pinterest, USMagazine.com, NASA, and Creative Commons, among others, were exposed to a major security bug called Heartbleed on Monday.

The bug was reportedly discovered by a member of Google's security team and a software security firm called Codenomicon.

A number of other websites may, according to a list being distributed on GitHub, be vulnerable to the bug as well.

The bug affects web servers running Apache and Nginx software, and it has the potential to expose private information users enter into websites, applications, web email and even instant messages.

And while most security experts advise that you always use websites and services offering SSL security encryption whenever possible, the Heartbleed bug has the ability to allow malicious operators to defeat this security layer and capture passwords as well as forge authentication cookies and obtain other private information.

security patch for the bug was announced on Monday, but many websites are still playing catch up. That's why websites like the Tor Project are, only somewhat tongue-in-cheek, advising that you stay off the Internet this week if you really care about your security.

Sintel Restored on YouTube Editorial | BlenderNation

It looks like the message came through – as of 9am this morning (CET), Sintel is available on YouTube again. In case you missed it, there was an outcry on the internet this weekend as it was pulled by Sony after alleged copyright infringement.

To put things into perspective, these YouTube takedowns are massively automated. Software scans all the uploaded media and flags any material where they detect copyrighted material. Large corporations such as Sony have enough traction with YouTube that they can then also automatically take down these media (smaller companies have to manually submit a DMCA takedown notice).

So is there still a problem? You bet there is – we’re lucky to have a huge and vocal community behind us, that spread this story over the web in a couple of hours. The story was featured on Cartoon BrewBoing BoingSlashdot and Reddit (which nuked the BlenderNation server for a few hours). This helped revert the takedown. If you’re a small publisher however, you will find it nearly impossible to talk to anyone and get your video back up. These automated takedowns can destroy your project and leave you powerless.

Boing Boing hits the nail on the head with their comment:

While it’s probably a mistake, because this is so brain-meltingly obviously wrong, it’s also a very stark example of how sloppy, over-broad, and consequence-free enforcement of copyright can damage culture.

I don’t think there was any intent behind this particular takedown – just an unfair, unaccountable system. I’m glad we got Sintel back.
